Cody Johnson Wins “Performance of The Year” at 2023 CMT Music Awards
COJO Music / Warner Music Nashville Platinum recording artist Cody Johnson won the third CMT Music Award of his career last night taking home Performance of The Year for his 2022 CMT Music Award for his performance of “’Til You Can’t” in the pouring rain in downtown Nashville last year. Tonight’s event was held in Austin, Texas’ Moody Center live on CMT, CBS and on demand on Paramount+. Cody’s stellar night also included outstanding live performances of his smash hit “Human” and as a featured lead vocalist on a show stopping, show-closing all-star tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd featuring a stacked lineup of music royalty including Cody, Billy Gibbons, Chuck Leavell, Paul Rodgers, Slash & Warren Haynes, alongside LeAnn Rimes and Wynonna Judd.
“I’m thrilled that our award win tonight was a group effort with my band and crew. Together we all made that performance come alive at last year’s show,” shared Cody. “Tonight, I was honored to be asked to perform twice. And what a ride it was especially sharing the stage with some of the greatest legends of all time. The nine-year-old boy in me was jumping for joy in a full circle moment watching those guys slay the guitars and remembering how much fun it was to learn to play by studying them when I was younger.”
Last night’s award win was the follow up to his two CMT Music Award wins at the 2022 ceremony for CMT Digital-First Performance of the Year for “Dear Rodeo” from CMT Campfire Sessions and Male Video of the Year for “’Til You Can’t.”
Cody’s week kicked off at the iHeartRadio Music Awards last Monday night as he was honored as Best New Artist in the country genre. He performed his double platinum-selling, Grammy winning, two-week #1 single “’Til You Can’t”, during the LIVE broadcast on FOX from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood as part of a Best New Artist genre mashup.
